The Carleton Garage Sale Raises Big Money for The Key

Posted by Joshua Jude, June 23rd , 2008.

The Eight Annual Lighten-Up Carleton Garage Sale was a giant success this year. The fundraiser, hosted and co-organized by Carleton’s ACT Center and benefiting The Key, Project Friendship, and Northfield Special Olympics, raised over $15,000 this year. This is about a $3,000 increase from the previous year. The event ran especially smooth this year, especially the days of the sale. The benefiting organizations and ACT were involved in every aspect of the event, from gathering and setup to pricing to running the sale to tear down. A big thanks to Connie Neubel and Kathy Lansing for their wonderful help and to the ACT Center (thanks Laura, Amber, Toby, and others) for being such a wonderful help this year. And of course, this being the Key’s website, one must not forget to thank the absolutely tireless efforts of the current and past Youth Board and members of the Adult Board who put in so much time and effort to make this a success. You guys were wonderful this year. To see a large quantity of pictures from the sale, please click here.

Book Club Reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy

Posted by Joshua Jude, June 23rd , 2008.

A boy and his father roam the Southeast United States after an unnamed catastrophe renders most life useless and dead. The surviving humans live as scavengers and/or cannibals just to stay alive. This is the basic premise of the new Cormac McCarthy book that has been selected by Book Club. Although bleak in tone and coarse in writing, this book brings up many important issues and questions that human kind has been struggling with for hundreds of years. Is this the book of the year? Well, it did win the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. But most importantly, this seems to be the book that gets kids who don’t read, to (re)start reading. It is that powerful and highly recommended. Read to page 175 for Monday June 23rd.

Funding for the Minnesota After-School Community Learning program is provided by the Minnesota Department of Education and further funding by the Office of Justice Youth Intervention Program.

Time to Garage Sale It Up!

Posted by Marie Fischer, June 18th , 2008.

Carleton’s out, and you know what that means! They leave all of their crap behind.

What you will find at the Carleton Garage Sale is the finest of the fine, and most definitely cheap. But not only do you find good bargains, you also help some of your favorite organizations, which consist of Project Friendship, Special Olympics, and, yours truly, The NUY. We have worked diligently with ACT for weeks, organizing all of these glorious left-behinds, so come and visit, and be sure to stake your place in line if you come Thursday morning!

You’re Finally Free!

Posted by Joshua Jude, June 1st , 2008.

Once again, congratulations seniors. It must have been a hot muggy experience sitting, surrounded by all those people. A big high five to Sam Dunnewold (I wish I had a picture) of his amazingly biting and comical speech to the seniors. I’m sure the administration loved it!
